Panel 11: Rethinking the Commandments, Rediscovering the Unconscious, Redefining God as the Unit.


Like Toto who drew open the curtain to expose an interactive audiovisual machine, Formal Theory unmasks the Ten Commandments by reinterpreting them as the set of three conflict resolution principles that underlie the human unconscious.

The unveiling of the relational substance of the Commandments represents a major scientific breakthrough in the fields of psychology and morality. While psychology in the past disqualified itself from dealing with metaphysics, the Formal Theory has adopted the Ten Commandments as defining the atomistic Unit of the social sciences. The rational understanding of the unconscious as a moral dynamic makes the science of relations the expert authority in the realms of psychology and of moral order. Religions are rediscovered as the precursors of scientific psychology and as confirming the universality of the transformation principles in the service of improving both the person and mankind.


“Don’t strike me-please don’t!”
Do not strike God out of the total picture. Oz or God is clearly defined as distortions of reality determined by one’s anticipations, themselves, a function of one’s relational modality. But we need to rediscover God, by redefining him objectively as an abstraction; the Unit does it.

The Mosaic Commandments
as Conflict Resolution Imperatives


1.Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

2.Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain.

3.Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images.

4. Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy.

5. Honor thy father and thy mother.

6.Thou shalt not kill.

7.Thou shalt not commit adultery.

8.Thou shalt not steal.

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

10.Thou shalt not covet.

Formal Commentary on The Relational Nature of the Mosaic Commandments


All Commandments guide the process, along reciprocation, as transforming passivity to activity, (Reciprocity: Formal Operation #1).

All Commandments emphasize the importance of cooperative as opposed to antagonistic relating as the principal basis of a just social order. (Opposition: Formal Operation #2).

The first five Commandments address how the individual relates to the community; transforming Alienation to Affiliation or Mutual Respect as the paramount condition of one’s faith, (Correlation: Formal Operation #3)

Commandment #1 is exacting total commitment.

Commandment #2 is limiting anger and pleading for moderation.

Commandment #3 is seeking total abstractness vs. concreteness or idolatry.

Commandment #4 seeks periodic reinforcement of the principles by experiencing the week as the reconstruction of the dialectic structure of the Unit of the creative process.

Commandment #5 extends the positive attitude of respect and conflict resolution to one’s parents.

Commandment #6 emphasizes moderation in acts of mastery or reciprocity.
