Introduction and Instructions
This test helps you to identify both your relational modality, that
is, your way of relating or communicating with others and the degree
of psychic tension or intensity of conflict you currently experience.
There are four major alternative categories
of relating. These are the following:
-
Submissive
Cooperative
-
Submissive
Antagonistic
-
Dominant
Cooperative
-
Dominant
Antagonistic
Each
relational modality has advantages and shortcomings. The psychic tension
scores indicate areas and degree of conflict experienced. Elevations
in these scales indicate that a person may need to seek help or counseling.
The significance of relational modalities
is that they determine the organization of personal and social reality
for a person. The mechanism underlying this organization is that relational
modalities are structurally distinct conflict generation and conflict
resolution patterns.
Clinically, we recognize organized and interconnected
behavioral phenomena as syndromes. Syndromes are conflict resolution
patterns, three cycles of interrelated emotions and behaviors determined
by an individual's relational propensities and by how a person manages
power. Syndromes vary, depending on how a person resolves conflict
along two parameters of the Conflict Resolution Process: the Dominant
vs. the Submissive and the Cooperative
vs. the Antagonistic relational modalities.
One's relational syndromal modality can result
in particular repetitions of experiences in terms of circular, self-fulfilling
prophecy patterns. For example, a dominant individual will opt for
social power positions, fear powerlessness, relate defensively, be
reduced to powerlessness and finally reach a compromise.
The
inventory identifies the relational pattern in a numerical fashion
along the four relational modalities as well as the degree of psychic
tension being experienced by the individual. The Metaphor testing
identifies the pattern in an impressionistic manner. It also helps
the individual to understand himself and make changes.
